FMIG How to approach applying into a dermatology residency:
International graduates are at a disadvantage compared to American graduates for all the obvious reasons. Even the need for a visa could impact whether you are considered, as there are many strong candidates who do not require a visa. Persons with foreign visas, who may eventually be required to leave the US, are only matched if viewed as a candidate with the potential to be a “World-Class” leader – an international star.
Before applying, you should first complete an internship (PGY-1 year) and become licensed to practice in the United States. After completing the PGY-1 year, several options are available to increase your chances of matching.
1) One or two year dermatology research fellowships
2) Completing elective rotations at dermatology programs to allow them to know you personally.
